One of my instagram followers asked me to discuss sunglass safety -- and what to look for so I thought I'd share it with my online followers as well -
UV protection is critical for your skin, but don’t forget about protecting your eyes.
I love the sun ☀️ but only with shades 🕶 : harmful UV rays can cause damage to the eyes and lead to pterygium, cataract, retinal damage and the cancers I treat like skin cancers of the eyelids, squamous cell neoplasia of the cornea and conjunctiva, and even melanomas.
Choose sunglasses with 100% UVA and UVB protection. These adorable Jimmy Choos (purchased from USC Roski Eye Optical) have 100% protection and so do many others— including less expensive choices— but some do not especially the mirrored fashion glasses so make sure to check. Also make sure the style is large enough to actually keep the sun rays out of your eyes.
This picture is from a recent trip to Hawaii for a conference -- this is Hanauma Bay in Honolulu where you can snorkel over a volcano!
