It's that time of year again...

...event season for those of us in academic medicine! Resident & Fellow graduations, end-of-year galas, all sorts of fun. i'm often asked about balancing a gala-worthy dress with your colleagues. My rules in general are:

Dagny Zhu, MD (left) looks lovely in the Roberta dress by Aiden Mattox  and Lila Ediriwickrema, MD is more gorgeous than ever in this crepe Halston Heritage dress which has a stunning mesh back.

1) you can show cleavage, back or leg if you like but only 1 of the 3. If you're on a date go for it and show it off but not with your boss around.

2) fitted is ok but not if the dress is also short (which means, per rule 1, you're just showing off leg)

3) make sure you can walk in your heels, whatever the height. You can't be off balance while you're talking about how passionate you are about your career.

This Herve signature gown  came in the perfect USC Trojan red for graduation (and I left my hair down purposefully!). Judith Ripka blue topaz earrings add just the right amount of sparkle to any dress. Mica Bergman, MD looks stellar in this summery, floral number from Clover Canyon.

Linda Nguyen, MD's ensemble for the Bascom Palmer graduation is just magical. This little fashionista designed this herself in Vietnam and she looks absolutely amazing.

and let's not forget about rule number 4) Don't be afraid to wear pants! Add bold colors, a pattern and something with some movement.
